River Pearl PLUS
The nomination trophy is handed over in Runè

The groundwork has been laid for the Rein da Sumvitg as a River Pearl PLUS

On 1 May, the municipality of Sumvitg received the nomination trophy for the Rein da Sumvitg. That paves the way for the awarding of the River Pearl PLUS label – which would be the first certification in the Surselva region.

The Rein da Sumvitg is body of water of which the region can rightly be proud. Its source on the mountain of Piz Vial lies at an impressive altitude of 3000 metres, from where it descends into the Lower Rhine at Surreinin. Apart from a few sections before the reservoir, the river flows entirely naturally through the stunning landscape. The diversity along its course is breathtaking, extending from glaciers and thundering waterfalls to deep gorges carved into the gneiss and uniquely eroded granite formations. The gently meandering stretch across the Greina plateau (Plaun la Greina), the moors and alluvial plains of which form an ecologically hugely important habitat for rare and endangered species, is particularly valuable.

It is precisely such intact water bodies and the commitment of the people behind them that the River Pearl PLUS label honours. The symbolic handover of the nomination trophy invites the municipality to join with the local population in taking the next step of seeking certification for the Rein da Sumvitg.
